Should I Use a Chemical Drain Cleaner

These days, you see more and more “natural” type cleaners on the shelves. Many people are even making their own harmless cleaning agents by combining some common household ingredients. If you sense a clog coming on because water is starting to drain slowly, you will probably be tempted to reach for the chemical drain cleaner you’ve seen advertised many times.

Chemical drain cleaners are a quick and easy solution. However, be careful when using these drain cleaners, as they can harm your plumbing or yourself.

Be Careful

One of the major concerns when using chemical drain cleaners is the toxicity. Most drain cleaners are harsh and use a combination of toxic chemicals. The fumes from these chemicals are harmful to your respiratory system and can irritate your eyes. Sometimes these fumes can linger in the air, even after you are done using them. Take precautions if you are planning on using a chemical drain cleaner. Open your windows and make sure to have proper ventilation. Also, wear protective eye wear, a mask, and gloves when possible. Sometimes, the chemical can splash back up onto your skin and can result in burns or scarring.

The Environment

Most types of chemicals are harmful to the environment. Chemical drain cleaners are no exception. The fumes are toxic, the bottles stay in landfills for years, and the chemicals end up in our water supply. When these chemicals end up in our water supply, fish and wildlife end up poisoned and we potentially harm our drinking water.

If you must use a chemical drain cleaner…

  • DO NOT mix any two different chemicals together at once! Even if it is within a few hours of one another. This can cause a dangerous reaction.
  • Do not combine any chemical cleaner with baking soda and vinegar. This can also cause a dangerous reaction.
  • If you are using any tools to unclog in combination with the cleaner, the best to use are augers or snakes.
  • Use the cleaner overnight so the chemicals have a better chance of completely draining from your pipes.
  • Only use when essential. Over time, chemical cleaners can damage your pipes.

Remember that chemical drain cleaners are a temporary fix. If your problem worsens and you end up with a major clog, get a professional plumber involved.

If you have used a chemical cleaner before calling a plumber, make sure to let them know. This will affect how they go about handling the clog, not your bill. It is important to let them know for their safety.
