Water pressure is one of those things that can sometimes be taken for granted. Yes, low water pressure can still get things done, but isn’t good water pressure better? If you suddenly notice your water pressure performing poorly, you may have a legitimate concern on your hands.
There are several things that can cause low water pressure. There are several things you can do to troubleshoot and consult with your plumber on.
First, you want to check all of the locations with water in your home or office. Determine if all locations have low water pressure. To do that efficiently:
- Run all of the faucets and showers to identify which rooms or areas have an issue.
- Run both, the hot and cold water, in all rooms to determine if it’s the water heater or not.
Second, check your water valves:
- There are two major shut-off valves that control water to your home or office. One of them is the valve on the street-side of your water meter. Technically, this valve belongs to the city utility workers who handle it, but it may be possible that it’s not fully opened.
- The homeowner’s side is usually located on an outside wall where the main line enters your home. Make sure this valve is fully open.
Next, check your pressure regulator.
- If your house is equipped with one, this is a common cause of pressure problems. Not all homes will have these, but for those that do, it can cause a serious upward spike in water pressure but it can also have the opposite effect – low water pressure!
- If this is the cause, you will find that all of your fixtures will have low water pressure. For this particular issue, it’s always best to call a professional.
Finally, think about replacing your entire plumbing system.
- This is usually the final and most expensive reason for low water pressure.
- Over years, pipes gradually accumulate buildup that eventually closes up the water flow.
- The solution may be to re-pipe the system with new plastic or copper piping.
- This kind of job normally requires a permit. Therefore, it is best to have your plumbing professional look at it.
