How to Safely Clean your Garbage Disposal

Want to learn how to clean your garbage disposal to keep it lasting and smelling fresh? Then keep reading for the full step-by-step directions on how to safely clean your garbage disposal!

Properly maintaining your garbage disposal will keep you from calling the plumber to fix something that you can easily prevent. Cleaning your garbage disposal will reduce odors or household pests – and it only takes a few seconds!

Before we get started – first thing is first… Never put your hand in the garbage disposal!

Next, you will need the following items:

  • 2 cups of ice

  • 1 cup rock salt or vinegar

  • Tongs or pliers

  • Lemon peels

Step one:

Put the two cups of ice down the drain and then the cup of rock salt (or vinegar).

Step two:

Turn on the cold water along with the disposal for about five to ten seconds – the ice and salt (or vinegar) will clear any built-up gunk and bits of food.

Step three:

If your disposal is clogged, turn it off before you try removing anything. Use tongs or pliers to remove any objects that can’t be ground up, such as rubber, glass, or fibrous foods.

Step four:

Plug the drain and fill your sink with three or four inches of cold water. Remove the drain plug and run the disposal to clear the drain line of debris.

Step five:

Throw the lemon peels down the drain, run warm water, and turn on the disposal. Using lemon or even orange peels in the disposal helps eliminate funky kitchen odors.

Step six:

Keep your disposal working at its best and your kitchen smelling fresh by cleaning your disposal every couple of weeks.
