Plumbing Tips for Thanksgiving

Plumbing Tips for Thanksgiving

Did you know that “Black Friday” is the busiest day of the year for plumbers? Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and is often spent with the company of friends and family members. Whether your plans include hosting out-of-town relatives for the week or putting on a thanksgiving dinner for all your friends, stay stress- and mess-free this holiday season with these tips to prevent plumbing problems from occurring during an already busy time of the year.

Kitchen:

The kitchen is typically ground zero for thanksgiving induced plumbing emergencies. 9 out of 10 times, a Thanksgiving plumbing emergency is caused by a guest. Follow these Thanksgiving plumbing tips for the kitchen to avoid a stressful emergency plumbing situation:

  • Turn on the water while the disposal is running. Afterward, use citrus peels to deodorize your disposal.

  • Set up garbage can so everyone knows where to toss the scraps left on their plate.

  • Use a paper towel to wipe grease out of pots, and then throw it in the garage.

  • Fats, cooking oils, and grease can clog your drains.

Avoid putting these items in your disposer:
  • Grease and oil

  • Meat (especially greasy meat, raw meat, or meat with gristle)

  • Pasta and rice (cooked or not)

  • Potatoes and potato skins

  • Four

  • Stringy, fibrous foods (corn husks, celery, lettuce, asparagus, onion peels, and garlic ends)

  • Fruit peels and rind

  • Eggshells

  • Non-food items (glass, metal, plastic, cigarette butts, bones)

Bathroom

With family and friends over for the holidays, just like the kitchen, your bathrooms will see increased use over Thanksgiving as well. No need to worry, as long as you follow a few key guidelines, you’ll easily be able to avoid a thanksgiving mess!

  • Clean soap scum and hair out of the sink and shower drain to keep everything flowing smoothly.

  • Encourage guests to wait 10 minutes between showers.

  • Put a trash can in every bathroom to remove the temptation for guests to flush garbage down the toilet.

Whole House

Even though most of the action occurs in the bathroom or kitchen, there are still a few general things to follow to ensure no plumbing issues around the house.

  • Before guests arrive, turn up the water heater so there’s enough hot water for everyone. The max temperature should be 125 degrees Fahrenheit for safety and comfort.

  • Check your washing machine hoses and consider replacing rubber ones with flexible stainless steel hoses.

  • Show adult guests how to use your main water shut-off valve in case of an emergency.
