Sink Ideas for Your Kitchen Remodel

Sink Ideas for Your Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen isn’t complete without its kitchen sink – even if you don’t cook every day, there most likely isn’t a day when you don’t use your sink. When it comes to replacing your kitchen sink when remodeling, there are quite a few things you might want to consider, such as the style, size, and most importantly the material.

Material:

Stainless Steel

Best for all types of uses; kitchens with stone or granite countertops. They’re affordable, easy to clean and maintain. Stainless steel is the most popular material for modern kitchen sinks.

Enamel

  • Best for light to medium use; traditional and contemporary kitchens. Enamel has a softer, quieter look and feel than stainless steel.

Solid Surface

  • Best for light to medium use; small, contemporary kitchens with lighter-weight cabinets and countertops. Solid surface has the look of enamel without the high price or heavyweight. However, it has a shorter lifespan.

Stone

  • Best for all types of use; kitchens with natural stone or wooden countertops. Stone is durable and porous. Stone sinks are also very heavy and more expensive.

Composite

  • Best for all types of use; large contemporary and traditional kitchens. Composite kitchen sinks are extremely durable and need no additional sealing. While it stands up to heavy-duty use, be mindful of exposure to extreme heat, which may crack or damage the surface.

Copper

  • Best for all types of uses; farmhouse-style kitchens. Antimicrobial properties with a beautiful finish. Copper sinks are more expensive starting at around $600-$1,200.

Size: Single or double sink?

Single

  • Multitasking – Hard to multitask

  • Oversized items – Wide enough to handle oversized, awkward items.

  • Drainboard – Using a drainboard is awkward.

  • Flexibility – A plastic tub works as a second sink.

  • Garbage disposal – Can’t access the disposal when sink is full.

Double

  • Multitasking – Can multitask.

  • Oversized items – Large items don’t fit well.

  • Drainboard – Has space for a drainboard.

  • Flexibility – Divider takes up valuable space permanently.

  • Garbage disposal – Can dedicate a drain to garbage disposal.

Another sink option:

Still can’t seem to decide between a single or double sink? Fortunately, there are some new models that combine the best features of both:

Double Basin

  • With low-profile dividers that accommodate large pots and pans.

Single Basin

  • With removable bins, sliding cutting boards, and strainer/colander inserts.

Style:

Farmhouse Style Kitchen Sink

  • Highly coveted kitchen feature; beautiful, spacious, and timeless, plus they add a distinctive look to any kitchen they’re placed in.

Undermount Kitchen Sink

  • Defined by the way the sink is installed in relation to the countertop. Rather than being dropped into a pre-cut hole in the countertop, undermount sinks are installed under the counter, making no rim between the countertop and sink.

Modern Kitchen Sink

  • Come in a variety of shapes and sizes to match your modern style kitchen.

Natural Stone Kitchen Sink

  • Carved out of one solid piece, either farmhouse or small round prep sinks.

Small Kitchen Sink

  • Often fit better in smaller places, especially kitchens with limited counter space.

Functional Kitchen Sink

  • Usually a double basin kitchen sink.

Deep Kitchen Sink

  • Can be found in many shapes and styles and great for washing bigger pans.

Drop-in Kitchen Sink

  • These sinks “drop” into a hole cut out of the countertop, with the sink rim or lop resting on top of the countertop.
