Top 5 Home Plumbing Tips
Repairing your plumbing can be a messy job, but it doesn’t have to be! A lot of your plumbing problems are preventable or easily fixed when addressed early on. Here is a list of 5 things your plumber wishes you knew!
1. DON’T POUR GREASE DOWN THE SINK!
Bacon grease isn’t just bad for you – it’s bad for your pipes too! Grease can build up and clog the pipes and become difficult to get out. If you have leftover fat, instead of dumping it down the drain, let it solidify and then toss it in the trash. If you do get some grease down the sink, try pouring this simple DIY down the drain:
- 1 large pot boiling water
- ½ cup baking soda
- ½ cup vinegar
2. TO FLUSH OR NOT TO FLUSH
Hygiene products, hair, wipes, and other items can easily clog drains and damaged sewer lines. Biological additives, made from bacteria, yeast, and/or enzymes, when flushed into the septic system may increase the efficiency of breaking down the solids. Do NOT flush these items:
- Wipes and baby wipes
- Pharmaceuticals
- Personal hygiene products
- Paints, cleaning products, and other household hazardous wastes
3. KNOW THE SIGNS OF PIPE AND FIXTURE LEAKS
Not all water leaks are easy to spot! Even if you don’t see any water leaks under sinks or around the toilet, there may be cracked or corroding pipes under the house and underground. Signs your plumbing has commenced a leak:
- High water bills
- Water under the sink
- Moldy floors
- Water running sounds
- Moist drywall
- Musty smell
4. FAUCETS – KEEP THINGS TIGHT
Faucets are a unique part of your plumbing because they are built with moving parts. Whether it’s filling the tub or running water in the sink while you brush your teeth, your faucet is meant to keep water flowing. Maintain your faucets by following these few tips:
- Tighten faucets over time or even replace more often than other plumbing parts
- Repair leaky faucets immediately – this will avoid further damage
- Clean your faucet aerators
5. SHOWERS NEED CLEANING TOO
Weak or low water pressure can be a sign that your system is in need of plumbing maintenance. In older homes it is especially common; occurring mostly because of leaky pipes, underperforming water heater, corrosion, or buildup in the showerhead. To clean the showerhead, try this easy DIY:
- Fill a plastic bag with vinegar to dissolve mineral deposits and put in the showerhead
- Tie the bag to the neck of the faucet with a rubber band
- Leave overnight for restored water pressure by morning
