One of the parts of our homes we rarely think about, until it’s too late, is our plumbing.
Just like our cars eventually get older and we may have to replace some parts, the same goes with your plumbing system. Over time, your pipes will experience corrosion, rust, and decay. Unless your home was recently built or is still very young, you’ll want to keep an eye out for some signs that may tell you it’s time to replace your pipes.
- Cracks, corrosion, leaks, rust, etc.
If you notice these on your piping, start doing a visual inspection on your other pipes around the house.
- Discolored water (unless you’re under a boil water advisory or unless it is normal for where you live)
- Wet baseboards
- Wet areas behind appliances or fixtures with water (dishwasher, sink, etc.)
- Water stained floors or walls
- Areas of flooring that look warped
- If you have lead pipes
- If you have an older home – know what kind of material your pipe is and their lifespans
Average Lifespan of certain materials:
- Brass, cast iron, steel 80-100 years
- Copper 70-80 years
- PVC 24-45 years
Blocked or slow draining pipes may be problematic as well. If you are experiencing these or low water pressure, you’ll want to inspect it to see if there is a blockage in your pipes. These issues can cause mold to brew which can lead to bigger problems. For these problems, it’s good to call in a plumber to inspect and snake out the lines if necessary.
Some minor repairs on exposed piping can usually be done on your own. However, if it involves pipes behind walls, that’s when you want to bring in a professional.
Replacing pipes isn’t a walk in the park. It can cost thousands of dollars and will most likely drive you to stay somewhere else while the work is being done. You definitely don’t want to go down this road until it is truly time. Bring in an experienced plumber who can help you determine if it’s time for this overhaul, or you only need to replace a small area of your pipes.
